Do not pay your shop $600 per wheel to do this simple job! The XC90 has a well known design flaw that allows the elements to get to the sealed wheel bearing races causing pre mature failure (mine at 52k.)
After getting the $1400 quote from my local dealer to replace the two rear bearings, I decided to do a little research. The dealer made it sound like it was akin to removing an engine in it’s complexities, be low-and-behold after you remove the tire it’s as simple as eight bolts (not counting the lug nuts.)
1. Remove the tire/wheel
2. Remove the top and bottom caliper
bolts/remove caliper.
3. Remove the four bearing housing bolts on
the inside of the housing
You will need a soft mallet to whack the housing until it comes out…don’t worry you cannot hurt anything but your feelings.
The wheel bearing/housing (all one unit) will run you about $90-110 a wheel and each wheel from start to finish took me about 15 minutes…. and now blissful silence as I roll down the highway!
