Volvo owners often complain about knocks, squeaks, rattles and clunks. Common failures that can create these noises are worn spring seats or worn out upper rear shock mounts.
Volvo front wheel drive models commonly develop a clunk in the front suspension that can be caused by worn out upper spring seats. This can occur in some models with as few as 30K miles and can be perpetuated by performance springs and shocks.
To provide increased longevity and better shock damping performance ipd has developed our own heavy duty upper spring seat. Our design incorporates more virgin (non-recycled) rubber which encourages a stronger bond between the rubber and the spring seat center mounting sleeve which is the most common point of failure on this part.
ipd’s heavy duty spring seat features additional material in key areas to increase longevity and consistent performance without adding additional noise or vibration into the chassis. Get your vehicle back to handling like a new car and keep it that way!

Ive recently investigated into a front end noise that occurs while going over a patch of road that causes all sorts of creeks and groans in the front suspension. I found it to be the worn spring seats, the rubber bushing around the metal spacer sleave breaks away and gives the strut assembly some 5cm of travel before the shock absorber will do anything. to check the seat, bounce the front end and look at the strut towers to see if there is any dramatic movement.

Hey Pete,
I was going to order new strut mounts ASAP once i put my brakes in because of the travel (maybe 3cm) of the upper mounts when jacking up and lowering the car along with loading it when on the ground. I do have an amount of noises when turning still, do you think i dont need new strut mounts and just need to replace the worn spring seats? Well, i guess i will have to buy the spring seats now, thanks for the advice! I will probably get the mounts unless you think i dont need to. My car has 97k
Here’s some pictures of the defective spring seats. it just shows what they look like and how the sleeve breaks away from the rubber bushing.
